How to clean quickly after a renovation
Renovating your home will certainly give it a refreshed look and it will help you transform it in any way you want to. The problem is that renovations are messy and dirty. Cleaning after builders is probably the worst part of the process since you have to clean your house from things like:
- Dust
- Plaster
- Specks of paint
- Varnish
However, whether you like it or not – there is no way you can skip this step. Still, with the right strategy, you can make this task a lot easier and more effective.
Think ahead
Before you start knocking down walls or fitting the new flooring, move the furniture, decorations, electric appliances and all other items out of the construction zone. If you don’t have where to put them, ask a friend or a relative if you can use their garage or shed to store your possessions for a few days. Another thing you can do is to rent a storage unit. That may sound like an unnecessary additional expense to you but, we promise, it will be worth the money. That is because, when everything is over, you will only need to clean the windows, the doors and the floor and not every single book on your shelf, for example.
Start with a cloth in hand
The renovation is finally completed and now it is time for you to do some cleaning. The first thing you will need to do is to remove as much of the dust in the room as you possibly can. To do that, use a wet cloth. Wipe everything in the room. Yes, absolutely everything including the light switches, the windowsills, the doorframe and etc. Be warned – this will take quite a while and, at some point, you will probably be tempted to switch on the vacuum cleaner but don’t do that. There may be big pieces of plaster or other construction materials which can easily clog and damage a domestic vacuuming machine. Use a broom and a dustpan to collect the big mess. Also, do not switch on the vacuum cleaner immediately after you have wiped the construction zone with a wet cloth because that may, too, damage the machine.
Clean piece by piece
In case you have forgotten to remove the furniture and all other items that you usually keep in the room that you renovated, you will need to clean everything piece by piece by hand. Rely on the same formula: cloth + some water.
Floors are at the end of your cleaning list
Clean the floors after you have cleaned everything else in the room. Once again, clean the big chunks of construction waste with a broom and a dustpan. Then you can vacuum the floors. Last, but not least, wipe them with a wet cloth.
Book a professional after-builders cleaning
Even after you clean up the entire construction zone, you will need to thoroughly clean the same area a few more times over the next few weeks. That is because the dust from the renovation tends to settle down very slowly. If you don’t like the thought of spending so much time cleaning, hire trained after-builders cleaning technicians.
